Chapter 499: The Legend of Medivh

"It’s… a demon’s figurative language," Jesse awkwardly chuckled, then explained, "It’s like when we say ‘take a bullet,’ you don’t actually put it in your mouth, right?"

"Sometimes," Greed replied, "as long as you aim well."

"Well, I sometimes do that," Jesse nodded, "as long as… uh…"

Greed furrowed his brows and said, "You guys are really something else…"

"Ghost! Master! I feel it, there’s a ghost here!"

Suddenly, a loud scream from Saenor came from upstairs.

The two people looked at each other. Greed immediately grabbed his helmet and dashed forward. Jesse quickly put on the Ghost Glasses. In the dark, spooky room, he couldn’t see anything clearly, so he had to feel his way up the stairs that were about to collapse, following the sound of Greed’s footsteps.

A cloud of dust rose, and spiderwebs fluttered around… Jesse finally made it to the second floor and heard Greed shouting ahead.

"What in the world?! Where is the ghost?!"

"Just now, I saw a ghostly figure. Where did it go?! You short, chubby guy, why don’t you look around! What’s the use of the master calling you?!"

"Shut up!"

At this moment, a dwarf and a demon were making a lot of noise. Jesse adjusted his glasses and looked towards the deep end of the second-floor corridor, watching as a raggedy woman’s shadow stumbled towards them!

The view was chaotic, but this figure, resembling a ghostly skeleton, was crystal clear!

These Ghost Glasses were really effective!

"I see her!" Jesse shouted.

"Where?" asked Greed.

The woman looked terrified as she floated downstairs, Jesse shouted again, "Holy water! Greed! Stairs! Stairs!"

Upon hearing the shout, Greed frantically took out the holy water and sprinkled it below the stairs. The ghost, who was trying to escape downstairs, was suddenly stopped by the splashed holy water, crying and turning back.

By now, Jesse had set up the device to extract the Essence of Undeath. Saenor had also positioned himself next to the machine according to the prearranged plan, ready to crank the handle.

But upon hearing the souls’ cries, he immediately halted the imp’s movement.

"I wasn’t supposed to die… I could have escaped to Grand Town!"

"It’s all because of those bandits riding black horses…"

"Those cursed monsters!"

The poor ghost kept repeating these few sentences until gradually fading away, even with the Ghost Glasses on. She didn’t just turn invisible, but completely disappeared. Perhaps she wasn’t a real spirit with a full will, just a lingering illusion left behind.

This kind of soul, even if collected by devices, probably won’t collect much Essence of Undeath.

After calming down, Greed said, "Did you hear that, the bandit on horseback, could there be Death Knights in Deadwind Pass?"

"I don’t think it’s Death Knights," Jesse said.

"Then what is it?" Greed nervously scanned the surroundings, then noticed the glasses in Jesse’s hand and said, "Let me borrow those glasses, I want to take a closer look too."

Jesse handed him the glasses and said, "I guess, they might be a group who used to serve Medivh before his death… I’m not sure what to call them, Treasure Hunters? Medivh had always been collecting treasures from all over the world for Karazhan."

"After the accident in Karazhan, such a serious explosion happened, didn’t those Treasure Hunters die together?" Greed asked.

"They probably weren’t alive to begin with," Jesse said, "Legend has it that this group used to be a gang of criminals who robbed tombs, deceived, and stole. They heard that Medivh had kept many treasures in The Tower of Karazhan, so they were tempted by it."

"Tempted by Medivh?" Greed asked, "Are they crazy?"

Jesse explained, "At that time, many people who didn’t know Medivh thought he was just a noble residing in this high tower in Stormwind. Don’t forget, back then he often hosted nobles living near Grand Town."

"Anyway, these people made him upset by trying to trick something out of him, so he killed them, used Necromancy to bring them back as obedient undead creatures, and had them continue collecting artifacts for him."

"But if Medivh is dead, will they still stay loyal to a dead person?" the dwarf asked.

"I don’t know, I guess they are loyal to Medivh’s spells," Jesse said. "Even if Medivh is dead, his commands remain, so these guys will keep following Medivh’s orders like magic brooms created by Elf Mages."

Greed asked, "Since you know so much about this, why didn’t you tell me about this group of monsters before coming here?"

"I didn’t plan on going around the Karazhan tower," Jesse said. "I thought these guys only appeared near Karazhan, but who knew people were dying at their hands even here. Go out and see, you can even see the road from Nethergarde to Darkshire on the mountain over there. Can you imagine Medivh’s monster servants wandering here causing trouble? There are caravans heading to Nethergarde passing through this road every day…"

"But we have to go inside, right?" Greed pointed in the direction deep into the valley. "We don’t know what we might find inside."

Jesse took out the map of the valley before it was destroyed by Karazhan’s explosion, compared the position of this village with several other small settlements and said, "Okay, my bad for ignoring the existence of these people."

"But there’s nothing to fear," he raised his magic wand and said. "If they were truly powerful, they wouldn’t be sneaking around dodging the Wizard’s Sanctum mage’s tracking. If these ghostly beings are truly undead creatures as the legends say, who knows, they might have even stronger Essence of Undeath…"

"Indeed, I’m actually looking forward to encountering these undead creatures," Greed swung the stone axe in his hand. "This can also be considered a contribution to protecting the Kingdom of Stormwind, right?"

"So, master, do you think we can find the treasures these people have kept?" Saenor exclaimed excitedly. "We should summon a Felhound here to help us explore and search for traces of Arcane treasures!"

"Then it will most likely lead us straight to the Tower of Karazhan," Jesse said. "And then that tower will swallow us up, turning us into one of the countless spirits trapped inside forever."

The Tower of Karazhan indeed holds countless treasures that mages from outside could only dream of. Otherwise, the Kirin Tor would not have established an organization named The Violet Eye with Dalaran’s insignia, specifically dedicated to investigating the ruins of Karazhan.

However, searching for the Essence of Undeath in this valley is one thing, but plundering Medivh’s treasures is a completely different matter.

Although the Tower of Karazhan at the end of the deep valley was not yet visible, Jesse could already sense the profound and twisting power of the tower.

At least for now, he had no intention of approaching it. Their purpose of coming to the valley this time was to find spirits, figure out how to obtain the Essence of Undeath… then leave, sell the items, keep a bit of the Essence of Undeath to show Jalane Ayrole to see if they could complete the robe, and that would be it.
