Volume 1 Chapter 375
byChapter 375: Why Is Your Brother So Awesome, but You Are Not?
Since City Hall got back on track, Old Harper, the not-so-professional mayor, still kept his title but mostly stopped being involved in the government and building matters of Hillenbrand Town.
He began to enjoy family time at home, and sometimes helped out at work, usually at the school or the police station, feeling more like a security guard.
Therefore, Lolth understood one thing very clearly.
Old Harper would never come to find her for no reason!
So, he appeared directly in her office at the torture tower, and it definitely wasn’t because of any matters in Hillenbrand Town.
Especially seeing Old Harper’s uneasy expression, awkward posture, and the paper bag he was holding, Lolth felt a sharp pain in her head.
"I just had a moment of peace…"
She sighed and sat down behind her desk, inviting Old Harper to take a seat.
"Please sit down, don’t rush; take your time to explain."
Old Harper heard Lolth’s words and calmed down a little. He sat across from her, placed the paper bag on the table, and pushed it towards Lolth.
"Shh—"
Accompanied by the sound of the paper bag rubbing against the table, Old Harper sighed.
"Lady Lolth, this is the letter I received the day before yesterday, and it contains… an item."
"A letter?"
Lolth paused for a moment and took the package.
"Yes, it is a letter from the United Kingdom of South Sotua," Old Harper thought for a moment and then said, "I don’t want to hide this from you; it was sent by the leader of my adventure group when I was an adventurer."
Upon hearing it was from South Sotua, Lolth was even more shocked.
"What is this… from South Sotua? How did it get sent here?"
Lolth opened the package and saw a letter and a bunch of random little things, and she curiously asked.
"Actually, it was probably sent about a month ago," Old Harper said, touching the top of his head, "and saying it was sent isn’t quite right; it was more like… it was brought over by those mercenaries."
He showed an awkward expression.
"I haven’t kept the fact that I returned to my hometown, Hillenbrand Town, to become the mayor from them, so we have exchanged letters occasionally over the past few years," Old Harper said, a bit uncertainly. "Well… the captain probably heard news about Vera Plain and was quite worried about me. Then, they happened to meet a mercenary group from the United Kingdom of South Sotua preparing to come here, and asked one of the mercenaries to bring this to me…"
Old Harper paused here helplessly and shook his head.
"But the mercenary that the captain asked just completed the first phase of his training a few days ago, passed the ‘basic exam of the first phase,’ and gained the freedom to move around, which is how he got the chance to contact me."
Lolth listened to Old Harper’s explanation and couldn’t help but feel a mix of laughter and tears.
"Well, if he had told me earlier that he had something to give you, it wouldn’t have taken this long. These mercenaries can be really stubborn."
Lolth sighed and then asked again.
"But that’s not right… If it’s something for you, you should keep it for yourself. Why are you giving it to me?"
Old Harper’s expression became even more awkward upon hearing this.
"You will see, my lord… there is a small misunderstanding here…"
He even used a respectful title.
Lolth, more confused, took out the letter from her paper bag and quickly read through it.
The handwriting was a bit messy and casual, but it didn’t make it hard to read.
The writing was in the common language of the land and was not very long.
Soon, Lolth finished reading it.
The main idea was very simple.
This captain firmly believed that after Hillenbrand Town fell, Old Harper, as his old teammate, would bravely fight against the demon race and had already suffered inhumane treatment as a prisoner.
Meanwhile, South Sotua sent a group of elite mercenaries, and in the captain’s view, even if they couldn’t save Hillenbrand Town, it would be enough to temporarily break through the demon race’s defenses there.
So, he asked the mercenary group to take Old Harper with them on their way back.
Given the situation in the United Kingdom of South Sotua, where they were clearing out spies and traitors, they were very suspicious of anyone coming from the demon race’s occupied areas, so he kindly prepared a travel bag for Old Harper.
Inside the paper bag, there was a set of mercenary armor, a level three magical protective glove, a fake mercenary ID, several modified "bounty completion receipts," and some special silver coins and copper coins from the United Kingdom of South Sotua.
With these items, plus Old Harper’s experience, he could indeed pass as a mercenary in the chaotic places of South Sotua.
At the end of the letter, the leader added a thoughtful note.
"If those guys fail, it’s okay. After I finish my ‘task,’ I will personally go to Hillenbrand Town to rescue you!"
Lolth couldn’t help but chuckle softly when she read this.
"You really are a man of honor, and you did pretty well back then," Lolth said teasingly to Old Harper, "this equipment is worth quite a lot, and you still plan to rescue him personally!"
Old Harper felt even more embarrassed when he heard Lolth’s teasing.
"Lady Lolth, please stop joking… I am just worried that he really finished his task and came here, offending you…"
"Oh, don’t worry, look at those mercenaries, haven’t I been treating them well?"
Lolth waved her hand and said.
Old Harper, hearing what Lolth said, was momentarily speechless, and showed a look of wanting to say something but holding back.
Seeing Old Harper’s expression, Lolth decided not to joke anymore, nodded, and said.
"Alright, don’t worry… Tell me the captain’s last name and first name, and do you know which mercenary group he is in now, and how strong he is?"
"Um, her nickname is ‘Bloodthirsty Luge,’ she is currently the captain of the ‘Victory Mercenary Corps’ in the United Kingdom of South Sotua. Two years ago, when I wrote to you, she had just broken through to high extraordinary, and now she might be at the epic level, after all, she is so confident…"
As Old Harper spoke, Lolth looked at him, who only had a formal level of power, and fell into deep thought.
To respect this elderly man’s dignity, she still didn’t voice her complaints.
"Okay, if this ‘Bloodthirsty Luge’ really comes to Hillenbrand Town, I won’t catch him," Lolth said, then picked up some paper and a pen. "But since you don’t want him to come, you can write him a letter saying that you are doing well here… I can deliver it for you."
"Thank you so much!"
