Chapter 142: Daily Mishaps

After the beast wave incident, the Zhen Yan Sect seemed to quiet down. Though Ling Qi continued investigating those targeting the sect, he found no leads. Even the cultivator Lin Feng had mentioned left no traces—their cleanup had been flawless.

You You reluctantly set the matter aside, adding extra safety awareness classes for disciples to prevent future incidents.

Overwhelmed disciples: “…”

The earlier suspicions about women being targeted also stalled. With fewer disappearances reported, whether due to the perpetrators laying low or other reasons, everything fell into uneasy calm.

The sect resumed its rigorous cultivation routine until…

“Immortal Sect Competition?” You You blinked. “That’s a thing?”

“Indeed, sect master.” Ling Qi nodded. “Top sects host this competition every hundred years. Nearly all notable disciples participate—it’s crucial for sect reputations.”

“Mandatory for all?”

“Only cultivators below the Nascent Soul Stage compete,” he clarified, “but no sect skips this chance to prove their standing.”

Though technically a disciple competition, results unofficially ranked sects. Zhen Yan Sect’s previous demon-clearing deeds went unrecognized precisely because they’d never participated, leaving others to dismiss them as minor.

“So we must join?”

“If we skip this, the next chance is a century later.” Ling Qi’s eyes gleamed. “Our disciples have improved drastically since Qiu Zhang’s teachings—especially Shui Yan’s group. They can rival top sect disciples.”

“Let’s crash this party then!” You You decided. Rankings mattered less than gaining combat experience. “When and where?”

“In ten days at Ming Xin Sect.”

“Ming Xin Sect…” She frowned. “Sounds familiar.”

“They’re Southern Region’s premier sect, same as us. They notified us about Moon Sea Secret Realm years ago.”

“Oh!” Realization struck—that’s how she’d met Yuan Papa!

With time short, they used recent exam rankings to pick participants. As first-timers, You You opted to lead. Ling Qi assured her smaller sects often had celestial maidens present.

They departed three days later. Just as they boarded the Flying Boat, Feng Rong appeared in flamboyant red robes, collar carelessly open to reveal pale skin—a far cry from his earlier bundled-up state.

“You’re back already?” You You eyed his masculine form. He’d exhausted himself repelling the beast wave months prior, resetting his cultivation.

“Took you long enough to notice.” He huffed, then frowned. “Leaving again?”

After hearing about the competition, he insisted, “I’m coming.”

You You agreed—keeping him away from Yuan Papa prevented clashes.

Aboard the Flying Boat, Feng Rong’s presence turned heads. His refined features and loose robes drew You You’s repeated glances.

Noticing her attention, he preened, leaning closer with a smirk. “Like what you see?”

“……” What cheesy dialogue.

Her eye twitched. “Actually… aren’t you cold?” She gestured at snow swirling outside. “It’s winter. Why wear thin robes unbuttoned?”

“……” His flirtatious expression froze.

Digging into her storage bag, she produced fluffy jackets identical to a certain beast’s fur. “Here, borrow these—”

*Crack*—something audibly broke.

“YOU YOU!” He erupted, face crimson. “Feng Clan members don’t feel cold! You’re the frozen one!”

“Then why get mad? You’re the one dressing weird!”

“I dressed like this for—!” He choked back words, storming off. “Forget it! You’re impossible!”

“What’d I do?”

Ling Qi: “…”

Disciples: “…”

Another day, another Feng Master meltdown.
