Chapter 515: Far From Home

To many sailors and merchants on Earth, the ocean seemed to possess a mysterious charm that kept them endlessly fascinated, unable to forget it even when they returned to land.

Jesse was willing to believe that this sense of fulfillment was a rich reward brought by sailing, rather than the sailing experience itself being truly enjoyable…

Of course, there may be true adventurers, pirates, noble explorers, and others who have a fanatic love for sailing and exploration, but for most participants, it is simply a reluctant means of making a living.

But in Azeroth, the sea truly has magical powers in a literal sense.

As they sailed further away from the Eastern Continent, even Jesse, a mage of his level, could clearly feel they were getting farther from the Ley Line. The passengers, who were slightly excited and curious when they just left Booty Bay, gradually became quiet and reserved.

By the second week, the whole ship felt somewhat lifeless.

On that rainy night, with dark clouds covering the twin moons, Jesse stood on the deck looking at the eternal endless darkness outside the ship. It felt as if he and the ship, compared to the vast dark night, were insignificant and pitiful, as if about to be swallowed by a world-devouring giant beast leaping out from the dark shadows.

If it weren’t for the Arcane lanterns swaying nearby, trying their best to illuminate the nearby sea water, he would have felt like they were not sailing into The Great Sea, but the Twisting Nether.

Because here, he felt the power of the shadows.

Not the approach of shadow creatures…

But the pervasive presence of shadows everywhere.

Small, barely noticeable, but truly omnipresent.

"What are you thinking about, Jesse?" Greed approached.

Jesse looked at him, the dwarf seemed to notice Jesse’s serious expression, chuckled and said, "Why are you looking at me like that, disappointed that I’m not Vereesa?"

"Where did she go?" Jesse asked.

"She’s resting in the cabin," Greed said. "I saw her earlier and she seemed unwell, not sure if it’s seasickness or some illness, did you notice?"

Jesse said, "She’s different from us, she’s an elf, easily affected when away from the Ley Line, I’ll give her the Living Ice Crystals later."

Greed hesitated for a moment and asked, "Doesn’t she know you have that little crystal? If it’s really because of leaving the Sunwell, she could just ask you straight up, right?"

"She’s too embarrassed to ask," Jesse said.

"What’s this…" the dwarf began, then remembered Vereesa’s awkward expression back in Booty Bay, nodded and said, "I understand now!"

"Is that succubus here?" He looked around, softly asked, "Ms. Molofeel, are you here?"

"How could I let them come here," said Jesse. "As long as our trip goes smoothly, they can stay in the cabin. If they get caught, we’ll be fined. I might as well just buy them tickets from the start."

The dwarf cleared his throat and said, "Look at her expression after seeing the succubus. I was right, Jesse. Our Elven Wisp really has a thing for you. There’s no use denying it!"

"Maybe she just doesn’t trust the Sayaad Demon," said Jesse.

"You…" Greed leaned on the railing, pointing at Jesse, then deflated and said, "Alright, there’s a slight possibility. But let me tell you, remember the night we left at The Salty Sailor Tavern? When you got back, the elf didn’t say a word. We were having such a good chat before. I thought we were getting along well!"

"I’m asking you, don’t you have any feelings for her?"

Jesse stared into the dark abyss and whispered, "How could I not…"

"That’s strange," Greed said. "I think you should be curious if she feels the same way about you."

"I am curious," Jesse said. "But I want to finish this trip to Kalimdor smoothly, earn some money, buy a house in Stormwind. Let me tell you, Greed. If we find some clues on the way back, I’ll have saved up almost seventy or eighty gold coins. Buying a decent house for my parents in the trade district won’t be a problem. I can bring them to Stormwind before next year’s Feast of Winter Veil. I’m so close to reaching this goal, so everything else can wait. Let me finish this important task first."

"Alright, for now, go see how she’s doing," Greed said.

"Understood," Jesse said as he turned and walked down the deck.

The stormy sea at night was a bit unstable, so he held onto the railing as he made his way to Vereesa’s cabin and knocked on the door.

The door quickly opened, revealing Vereesa standing inside looking slightly surprised as she asked, "Jesse? What brings you here!"

"I heard from Greed that you’re not feeling well," Jesse said.

"It’s nothing," Vereesa straightened up and said, "That dwarf seems to think everyone is weak."

Jesse glanced at the dim Arcane light in the elf’s eyes, sensing her gaze, Vereesa blinked and lowered her eyes.

"Are you sure you’re okay?"

"Maybe I’m just not used to being on such a faraway ship, I didn’t inherit any of the Quel’dorai lineage from the Lordaeron monarch." She smiled and said.

Jesse took out the Living Ice Crystals from his pocket and said, "Try using this."

Vereesa, who was initially stubborn, lost her confidence when she saw the crystal, her face looked like she wanted to swallow it in one gulp.

Compared to Blood Elves who became obsessed with fel magic later on, High Elves were more restrained in this aspect. Vereesa realized her behavior, took a deep breath, and asked, "You want to give this to me? What about you?"

"Me? I don’t need the Sunwell," Jesse replied.

"But you need magic, right?" Vereesa asked, "I mean, Sayaad’s invisibility requires a lot of magic."

Jesse felt there was more to Vereesa’s words. Did she know how succubus replenished their mana?

It’s not strange for elves to know about this. Even though Vereesa was a special female elf, she was still an elf.

"It’s okay," he said. "We are not in battle now, we don’t need to confront anything or have her track anything. She just needs to stay hidden, it won’t consume much magic."

Upon hearing this, Vereesa finally said, "Thank you, Jesse."

"There’s nothing to thank me for," Jesse replied.

When Vereesa took the crystal from Jesse, she immediately took a deep breath and hugged it close. The light of the Living Ice Crystals dimmed by half, and the fire of Arcane in her elven eyes suddenly lit up.

Quel’dorai’s ability to extract magic is much more straightforward and brutal than a succubus.
