Chapter 610: Fishing

Vereesa wiped the water from her face, looked at Jesse, then at his hands, and asked, "Where are the fish you caught?" "I didn’t catch any," Jesse replied.

With a hint of complaint in her tone, Vereesa asked, "Then why did you come back without fishing properly? What happened to the fishing rod and the worms? Did you drop them in the water?"

Why was she so upset?

Jesse glanced toward the camp, but the deep jungle hid everything from view.

"I heard noise over there and thought something was wrong at the camp. The fishing rod is still there… But why did you come here? What’s that commotion?"

Vereesa frowned and said, "Don’t go back. I’ll fish with you." "What about the succubus?" Jesse asked.

"She’s guarding the camp, isn’t that your order? Besides, she’s better suited to watch things there; I’m not." Vereesa cleared her throat, put her hand on Jesse’s shoulder, turned him toward the pond, and said, "Go."

"So what exactly—"

Before Jesse could finish, Vereesa gave him a push that sent him stumbling forward, nearly tripping over a tree root. "Are you pretending not to know?" Vereesa asked.

"Should I know?" Jesse replied, walking with his head tilted.

"Greed Thunderfist," Vereesa said. "He must have told you he likes Mosa."

"Ah, sort of. Wait, hold on." Jesse stopped and turned back. "So is he with Mosa…?" Vereesa shifted her tongue awkwardly, stared at Jesse, and whispered, "What else?"

"Impressive," Jesse said. "I thought he wouldn’t dare."

As he pushed through the bushes ahead, Vereesa asked from behind, "Did you tell him to do this?"

"Why me?" Jesse said. "I did tell him to be clear with Mosa, but I didn’t say to act so fast." "Hmph," Vereesa muttered. "You warlocks… Don’t think I’ll believe you."

"At least Mosa didn’t refuse, right? If she didn’t want to, Greed couldn’t have…" Jesse trailed off, then asked, "But I didn’t expect things to move this quickly. Has Mosa fully recovered?"

"I think so. She lifted Greed like a little rabbit," Vereesa said, holding back a laugh. "Greed begged me not to tell you, but I didn’t promise."

Hearing this, Jesse turned back. "Mosa started it?"

"Yeah," Vereesa said. "She looked happy, while Greed seemed lost. Didn’t he say he’d been through a lot?"

"He’s never been with a Tauren before," Jesse replied.

Vereesa couldn’t help laughing, but only briefly before sighing deeply. "Mosa still can’t come back with us."

Jesse nodded. "I’m not surprised. Even if she wanted to, Greed wouldn’t agree." Vereesa said, "You really know that dwarf well."

They reached the pond, and Jesse lifted the fishing rod to find the worms gone.

He sighed, pulled out another worm, and baited the hook. Just then, a muffled grunt came from the camp, making Vereesa twitch her pointed ears awkwardly.

Jesse tried not to imagine how a dwarf and a Tauren got along as he cast the rod again and set it by his feet.

Vereesa sat beside him, watching the raindrop ripples on the water. "If the Kaldorei take us on their hippogryphs, what about Molofeel? Can she avoid Shandris Feathermoon’s notice? Maybe in the forest, but not at Feathermoon Stronghold."

"She can turn invisible through the centaur camp; she and Saenor aren’t the problem. We are," Jesse said.

Vereesa asked, surprised, "Make her go that far? Out of this forest… then across half of Stonetalon?" Jesse gave her a puzzled look. Was she worried about a demon getting tired?

Vereesa seemed to catch herself and added quickly, "After all, that might delay us."

"She’ll find us," Jesse said.

"By the way, would they take us by boat to Gadgetzan?" Vereesa asked. "Hiding in a ship should be easier than on a hippogryph. Molofeel escaped sentries before when we fought that half-orc."

"I thought about it," Jesse said. "But the Kaldorei won’t expose themselves to outsiders, especially not on a ship."

Vereesa said, "I checked the map. We can stop at the Tanaris Desert coast and head north to Steamwheedle Port ourselves. They don’t need to face the goblins."

"That might work," Jesse said. "It depends how much they care about the Silithid invading this jungle. I hope they agree. Otherwise, I don’t want to cross Stonetalon again and deal with those harpies."

"Me neither," Vereesa murmured. "I can’t wait to report back." "By the way, if we find Dethmoora, will that get you promoted to Ranger Lord?" Jesse asked.

"I think… I don’t know," Vereesa replied. "Ranger Lords usually earn it fighting Amani Trolls, but there’s an exception: Nathanos Marris, that human. Sylvanas named him Ranger Lord right after she became Ranger-General."

"Why didn’t your sister name you too?" Jesse asked.

Vereesa shook her head. "That move already upset the Farstriders and royalty. Promoting me from Ranger Captain so soon…"

"Not as fast as Nathanos," Jesse said.

"True," Vereesa admitted.

"I remember at Nethergarde, you helped hunt the Eredar mages," Jesse said. "At Mandel Outpost, on the eve of the final battle… And in that battle, you and Sylvanas held the line against demons near Azgath. Aren’t those fights enough for Ranger Lord? Isn’t the Burning Legion stronger than Amani Trolls?"

"How do you know about Mandel Outpost?" Vereesa asked.

Jesse licked his lips. "I was on watch that day and overheard Farstriders talking."

Vereesa studied him, then looked at the water. "Actually, Hadulon Brightwing agrees. He thinks my actions at the Dark Portal should’ve earned promotion. Maybe Sylvanas’s stubbornness… made royalty think the Farstriders favor the Windrunner Family too much. So if I don’t become Ranger Lord, I’ll accept it. But I must prove I’m worthy, at least more than that human."
