Chapter 83: Betrayal
Compared to the Ancient Deity witnessed in Great Chu’s imperial city, this version looked far more horrifying. Perhaps this was their true form.
The ground on the other side turned ink-black, morphing into something resembling solidified rules. Endless objects sank into the transformed earth as the entire palace—even the entrance steps—was swallowed. A shadow blacker than pitch crawled out, coalescing into another Ancient Deity’s body.
“Your grasp of the power of rules has improved.”
Zuo Meng had barely stepped onto the stairs when the black gas trapped his feet. The earth itself had been rewritten, its fundamental nature altered. This wasn’t mere magic but a distortion of reality’s rules.
“Master, after all these years, you remain unchanged.”
Huang and Black Shadow blocked Zuo Meng’s path, their rules locking down the surroundings. Above, Huang’s colossal palm descended without hesitation. Unlike typical villains who monologued, he struck to kill from the first move.
*Master?*
*Who are you?*
Zuo Meng stared at the murky shadow, failing to recall this blob’s identity.
“Truly the Taichu Immortal Ancestor—still dripping with arrogance.”
Black Shadow seethed. As one of the seven ancient rebels sealed for defying immortals, he’d assumed his name was etched into the Taichu Immortal Ancestor’s memory. Yet this enemy hadn’t even bothered to learn his name! This wasn’t mere scorn—it was utter disregard.
“Names don’t matter.”
Zuo Meng raised his hand to channel the world’s power, only to meet resistance.
Outside, the great formation whirled violently. Black nails oozed human aura, severing the cavern from the external world.
“Hm?”
Zuo Meng frowned. His rules had been blocked.
Huang’s strike arrived.
BOOM!
The palm crushed Zuo Meng and the palace into dust. Golden chains coiled around Huang’s hand, sealing the airspace—flight became impossible except for him.
Earth rules.
Sky rules.
These were the truths Huang and Black Shadow had unraveled over epochs, the source of their confidence. They now recognized Zuo Meng’s original sealing method as rule-based. Understanding their foe’s tactics emboldened them. Still, caution ruled: three epochs went into crafting the rule-sealing formation alone. Only after testing it against their own powers did they proceed.
First, the great formation isolated external rules. Next, Zhao Zheng’s team drained the cavern’s energy, weakening Zuo Meng to the brink. Then came the killing blow.
“His aura persists.”
Huang grimaced, sensing his target’s survival.
As dust cleared, Zuo Meng reappeared. Master Xue’s earlier composure had vanished—his robes hung shredded, blood streaking his forehead.
“Finally, you’ve fallen from your altar,” Black Shadow crowed.
During the first epoch, countless attackers had failed to scratch Taichu Immortal Island’s master. Now, blood flowed.
*If he bleeds, he can die.*
“Is this the power of rules studied over so many epochs?”
Zuo Meng glanced at his disheveled state, drawing power from the cave to restore himself. But as soon as he began channeling it, the energy was blocked again – this time cut off from within the cave itself.
“Did you think we’d only prepare one countermeasure against you?”
Black Shadow cackled wildly.
“Confused why your cave’s energy failed? Everyone in your Tai Chu Immortal Gate except that naive boy has switched sides.” As he spoke, the ground’s darkness dissipated to reveal several silhouettes entering.
Du Fan, who had earlier radiated intimidating black gas, now lay crumpled like discarded rags, drenched in blood with uncertain survival. Opposite stood the acting Headmaster of Tai Chu Immortal Gate Yu Ruyi, Elder Zhi Hua, former Cold Mountain Temple abbot Jie Ming (now Zhang Tu), along with Zhi Hua’s children Zhi Xin’er and Zhi Mo.
Betrayed by all?
Zuo Meng’s expression remained impassive, as if expecting this. His gaze lingered on Zhi Hua, memories surfacing of the little girl who used to visit his shop long ago.
That child had grown.
And changed.
“Mr. Xue.”
Yu Ruyi wore a conflicted look. She’d once considered pursuing this man, but such thoughts faded after becoming an Immortal Cultivator. Now she realized the gentle Mr. Xue had never truly noticed her – his warmth always held unbridgeable distance.
They belonged to different worlds.
“Uncle Xue!”
Zhi Hua’s eyes reddened seeing her disgraced mentor – the man in blue robes who’d been her last family after her parents died. Yet for her children’s sake, she’d betrayed him.
“Uncle Xue, forgive me! I can’t lose Xin’er and Mo!”
“…Forgive me!!”
As Zhi Hua sobbed, Zuo Meng smiled his usual gentle smile.
“Little Zhi Hua’s all grown now.”
His voice carried the same tone from years past, though everything else had changed.
“It’s alright.”
When Zuo Meng patted her head, time seemed to freeze.
“Now!”
Huang and Black Shadow struck simultaneously.
They’d brought these people solely to unsettle Zuo Meng’s focus. This momentary vulnerability was their opening.
BOOM!
Black gas erupted from the earth like a tsunami seeking to swallow Zuo Meng whole. Above, countless law chains coalesced into a spear aimed at his heart.
The clashing energies detonated catastrophically, the blastwave hurling everyone backward.
“He’s finally dead!”
Zhao Zheng exhaled in relief upon sensing Zuo Meng’s vanished aura. Letting Master Xue survive would’ve meant endless retaliation – a terrifying prospect given his power.
“The scourge of our era is finished.”
“Evil never triumphs.”
Emperor of Chu eyed the two Ancient Deities, keeping further thoughts unspoken. With one foe gone, these remained.
“What about him?” The Prime Minister gestured at the dying Chess Sage Du Fan.
“Kill-”
Emperor of Chu’s command died as world-shaking energy erupted from the settling dust. From Master Xue’s corpse emerged a new figure.
CRACK!
The Emperor’s eyes burst instantly. Nearby, the Prime Minister and National Master dropped dead mid-breath.
The triumphant Ancient Deities were flung aside like trash, their rewritten laws overwritten by superior authority.
