Chapter 100: Wu Qiuyue
“The previous case?”
After staying home for over three months, Zuo Meng suddenly received a visitor—Wu Qiuyue, the assertive woman who’d given him her business card before. She seemed to be the CEO of some company, though Zuo Meng had long forgotten its name and misplaced her card. He vaguely recalled the older woman mentioning her daughter would help him get justice.
“The main offender has been sentenced, and their backers were dealt with fairly.”
Wu Qiuyue wore her usual professional attire, her demeanor cool. As the head of a major corporation, she clearly had influence. That she’d help a stranger like Zuo Meng seek justice spoke well of her character.
“Oh…! Thank you! Would you like to come in?”
With his parents and younger brother Chen Yue at work until evening, Zuo Meng found himself alone. Though wanting to shut the door, he forced polite words—after all, she’d helped him. He’d only meant to be courteous, but Wu Qiuyue took it seriously.
“Alright.”
She accepted his invitation, leaving Zuo Meng stunned. Weren’t business leaders supposed to be busy? He’d been in the middle of cultivation!
The cluttered room didn’t faze Wu Qiuyue. She found a seat while Zuo Meng flopped down elsewhere, eyes closed, resuming practice. His Sword Techniques were perfected, and his cultivation method—originally from his own world—progressed effortlessly. His internal energy had absorbed scattered remnants, reaching forty years’ worth.
Now he felt the real world’s constraints. Further growth would require slow, year-by-year accumulation like ordinary people.
“You’re unemployed?”
“Quit after hospitalization. Haven’t looked yet.”
Zuo Meng kept his eyes shut, eager to dismiss this walking security risk. With life-threatening stakes in his cosmic game, he couldn’t afford distractions.
“Start at my company Monday. Director-level salary.”
Wu Qiuyue helped herself to water from the dispenser. Pausing at the door, she remarked, “Good water. Thanks.” before leaving Zuo Meng bewildered.
Why visit? Mental issues? Why offer employment? Giving up, he resumed cultivation. Forty years’ energy wasn’t enough for recklessness. Unlike novel protagonists with plot armor—finding secret manuals in cliffs or last-minute rescuers—Zuo Meng faced a hostile world after the white chess piece’s move. Recklessness meant death.
He considered using his second chess piece to accelerate progress, but future plans demanded patience.
Downstairs, Wu Qiuyue glanced up at his apartment, confirming her suspicions.
Chen Fei wasn’t ordinary.
“An ordinary man couldn’t scare off a Corpse Lord that night.” Her visit wasn’t random—it involved her mother’s safety. Most men tried impressing her, yet Chen Fei acted like she was nuisance.
“I’ll uncover your secrets.” She drove off.
Two weeks later, Zuo Meng neared his limit. Wu Qiuyue visited daily, even befriending his family.
“Trouble. Massive trouble!”
Packing his bags, he told parents he’d seek opportunities in the city—really fleeing Wu Qiuyue’s prying. Testing revealed her strength, but not its limits. She clearly sensed his uniqueness.
“Stay away. Trouble follows her.”
Through observation, Zuo Meng pieced together her dual identity: medicinal company CEO and shadow organization member. Without information networks, he relied on millennium-spanning experience (two lives, three dream epochs). Old monsters see through schemes—he’d spotted two assassination attempts against her.
Enemies or missions made her dangerous. He sought only the giant’s true form to alter dream perception—not power struggles.
“Leaving.”
Locking up, he took a taxi toward mountainous terrain, aiming for rumored temple or shrine.
Elsewhere, Wu Qiuyue studied wreckage, expression icy.
“Too long inactive? Overstepping… means death.” Lightning crackled around her as crimson killing intent billowed…
